Research Compliance at the University of Chicago
5/27/05
A clear identification of roles and responsibilities in the oversight of sponsored research projects is critical to an effective compliance structure. URA, in consultation with numerous offices and individuals on campus, has prepared a Compliance Responsibility Matrix (DOC), along with a companion Roles and Responsibilities document, to serve as a reference and guide for all of the primary players in sponsored research activities.
Our goal is to equip all parties to the research endeavor with a fuller understanding of the compliance structure at the University, and each person’s specific role and responsibility within this enterprise. Strengthening compliance awareness will enable each of us to integrate our specific oversight responsibilities into the routine operational fabric of grants and contracts proposal and award management.
Please review these documents carefully. Each of us has a significant stake, and role to play, in a thriving University research program. It is therefore incumbent upon us to be trustworthy stewards of the research dollars which come into the University, committed to the development and dissemination of new knowledge carried out in an environment of legal and ethical attentiveness.
Follow-up Workshop—Why Should I Care About Roles & Responsibilities?
Please join us for a conversation about the oversight responsibilities associated with sponsored research. We will discuss the Compliance Responsibility Matrix, Roles & Responsibilities in the Oversight of Sponsored Projects, the University’s Whistleblower Policy, Principal Investigator Responsibilities for Financial Oversight of Grants and Contracts, and other policies that address research compliance. Mary Ellen Sheridan, Associate Vice President for Research, will lead the discussion. Highly recommended.
Monday, June 6, 2005 from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Research Institutes Building, Room 480
