Spending the Federal Research Dollar

Principal Investigators of research grants have an excellent sense of how their own budgets are spent, but may lack the broader picture. The below graphic (based on an idea originating at MIT) shows how a typical dollar of federal research funds at The University of Chicago is expended, broken into different categories of costs.
