About University Research Administration
Sponsored Programs — Education & Training
- University of Chicago Compliance Responsibility Matrix (DOC)
- Roles & Responsibilities in the Oversight of Sponsored Projects
Each year, the University accepts millions of dollars in sponsored funding. The largest percentage of sponsored funds comes from the Department of Health & Human Services (mostly from the National Institutes of Health). The National Science Foundation constitutes the second largest federal funding source. Numerous other agencies and organizations also contribute significantly to our research and academic mission. See 'University of Chicago Funding Profile' for most recent data on sponsored programs.
To support the proper management of these funds, a University Task Force, established in 2002, helps to plan and coordinate the Sponsored Programs Education & Training endeavor. This includes regular offerings strongly recommended for every administrator, and nationally available programs and on-campus workshops addressing a series of special topics. Particular training in regulated research activities (e.g., human subjects) is offered through the appropriate regulatory committees on campus.
In June 2000, comments prepared by Robert Zimmer, then Deputy Provost for Research, and now President of the University, introduced sponsored programs administration training at the University. The philosophy of his message, "Care and Maintenance of the Research Mission" is as relevant today as it was then, and we invite you to take a look.
Announcements about upcoming training and education sessions are sent to the Grantsadmin-URA listserv. If you would like to be added to our list, please see the E-mail Lists page and make your request.
